In a time when most items are built using high tech materials and sophisticated plastics, it is refreshing to see a product built with wood. the ‘magno’ wooden radio is designed by indonesian designer singgih susilo kartono for the spanish company vinçon. Each radio is hand made from locally grown sonokeling and pine wood in Singgih’s home town, temanggung. 16 hours of works goes into making the radio, which is then individually numbered and dated. singgih also designed the product to show off the imperfections aiming to create imperfectness. the radio is battery operated and includes FM, AM and SW bands. oh, and forget complicated repairs, the ‘magno’ only needs some wood oil from time to time. The sound is very pure and resonant due to the radio receiver employed and the especially suitable wood (made of East Indian rosewood, the same material from which many musical instruments, such as flutes and guitars, are made). Magno comes from the word “magnify.” Like a magnifying glass, the Magno wooden radio draws attention to beautiful details and high quality craftsmanship in a simple form. The texture and grain of each Magno wooden radio tells a unique story, one of sophistication in simplicity, and beauty in sustainability. The radio receives VHF and medium wave.
