A Rare and special vintage studio pottery slab vase by British potter Alan Wallwork (1931 – 2019)
The vase features an abstract, brutalist design with a textured, earthy stoneware finish.
It has impressed circular and semi-circular motifs, highlighted with a vibrant turquoise glaze.
Wallwork was known for his distinctive hand-built, sculptural forms, often featuring incised or impressed decoration.
This piece is characteristic of his work produced at Greenwich Studio (1960 - 1965) and is highly collectable
signed with a W incised on the base of the vase
" My pots have no deep “message”, or not consciously. They have the simple forms I personally warm to and I try to give them a variety of pattern and texture that I find sympathetic to the touch, not just the eye. Colour is not all important, but surface is. I hope my pots invite being picked up and felt "
- Alan Wallwork, August 2012
