MOLA ART OF THE KUNA INDIANS
The Mola art form originated with, and remains essentially unique to the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Archipelago near Panama’s Atlantic coast. Mola designs represent traditional Kuna belief in the personification of nature and illustration of pairing, fertility, fecundity, and reproduction. Each Mola is a unique representation of the Kuna environment. Motifs include birds, sea life, plants, and flowers. Occasionally, Kuna artists vary from traditional motifs and incorporate scenes from advertisements for products, political slogans, among other themes in their designs.
