A very pretty Oriental style jewellery box with wind up musical magic- when you open the box the music begins along with a ballerina, who despite losing her arm still put on a tutu and twirls. The box is a very dark brownish black, with a lacquer finish decorated in a red and gold Japanese scene that has little bits of mother of pearl scattered here and there. A few of the mother of pearl pieces have fallen off and only the glue remains
Inside the box is lined with red velvet and the mirror on the back of the lid is made up of segments that when open the twirling ballerina can be seen from many angles, one of the mirror segments has a small chip. The music box turn key is on the underside of the box . The tune it plays sounds very much like Doctor Zhivago theme tune - Lara's Theme. In great condition for such an old item ( 70 years old) - a small paint chip on the front ( see pictures ) and as mentioned before the ballerina has lost one forearm. There is no longer a key to lock the box
