This magnificent table is from a time long gone. The solid oak looks almost black and the battered wonkey top is charmingly worn. The table is quite crudely constructed . The decorative leg shows it was made with simple tools created to be "below stairs" a workhorse kitchen kind of table. There is no refinement in design or posh veneers to impress the gentry. This was made for purpose. For a Baker. A single draw with a brass cup handle, runs the entire width of the table to accommodate the rolling pin.
It is back breakingly heavy yet looks quite light on its relatively dainty legs.
I love this table so much - for all its history and scars. To fathom how many human lives it has inhabited and how many more still to come. This table is older than me by a few hundred years and I have no doubt that if treasured it will have a few hundred more
